Your Guide to Fly Protection for Horses

Here in Texas, fly season can be particularly brutal, and we know a thing or two about fly protection!  Throughout late spring and into those sweltering summer months, horses are exposed to a variety of biting insects, including flies, mosquitoes (here, they're likened to prehistoric pterodactyls), and gnats, which cause our equine partners significant irritation and discomfort while also potentially transmitting diseases. Fly protection can help to reduce your horse's exposure to these insects and keep them more comfortable. Fly season typically occurs during the warmer months of the year, the exact timing of fly season can vary depending on where you live, but it generally begins in the spring and continues through the summer and into the fall.

It's a good idea to arm yourself early with all the essential fly control products and have them on hand and ready to use just as the Ankle Biter Air Force begins to strike! These products include fly sheets, fly masks, fly leggings, and insecticide sprays or wipes. For increased protection, you may also want to consider other strategies to reduce flies around your barn, such as using fly traps, cleaning up manure and other waste promptly, and minimizing standing water.

It's important to note that some horses may be more sensitive to flies and require fly protection year-round, while others may not need it at all. Observe your horse and watch for signs of irritation, such as tail-swishing, stomping, or restlessness, to determine when they may need fly protection.

Why Use Fly Sheets & Fly Masks?

Using a fly sheet or fly mask on your horse can provide several benefits, including:

Protection from Flies and Other Biting Insects: Flies can be a nuisance to horses and can also carry diseases. A fly sheet and fly mask can help to protect your horse from fly bites and reduce the risk of disease transmission.

Preventing Sunburn: Fly sheets and fly masks can also provide protection from the sun's harmful UV rays, helping to prevent sunburn and other skin irritations.

Reducing Skin Irritations: Some horses are sensitive to insect bites and can develop skin irritations and allergies. A fly sheet and fly mask can help to reduce the risk of skin irritation and keep your horse more comfortable.

Keeping the Coat Clean: A fly sheet can help to keep your horse's coat clean by protecting it from dirt and dust.

Overall, using a fly sheet and fly mask can help to improve your horse's comfort and well-being during fly season. Just be sure to choose a properly fitting fly sheet and fly mask, and to monitor your horse for any signs of irritation or discomfort while wearing them.

How to Measure for a Horse Sheet or Blanket

Measuring your horse correctly is essential to ensure that you choose a fly sheet or fly mask that fits properly and provides adequate protection. Here are the steps to measure for a fly sheet or fly mask:

How to Measure for a Horse Blanket

Step 1: You'll need a measuring tape! Use a flexible measuring tape, like those used for sewing, or the 'Tough1 Sure-Measure horse and pony height & weight tape' to measure your horse.

Step 2: Measure the length of your horse's back. For a fly sheet, start at the point of the shoulder and measure along the horse's back to the point of the buttock. Make sure the tape is level and straight.

Step 3: Measure the width of your horse's chest: Measure the widest part of your horse's chest and be sure to keep the tape level and straight.

Step 4: Measure the circumference of your horse's neck: Measure the circumference of your horse's neck at the base, where the neck meets the chest.

Step 5: Measure the length of your horse's body. Measure from the center of the chest to the center of the tail. Be careful doing this as some horses can be finicky when around their backside and when entering the kick zone.

How to Measure for a Fly Mask

For a fly mask you'll want to measure the distance between your horse's ears, from the base of one ear to the base of the other. You'll also want to measure the circumference of the horse's muzzle at the widest point, just below the eyes.

Once you have these measurements, you can compare them to the sizing chart provided by the manufacturer to determine the appropriate size for your horse. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for measuring and sizing their products, as sizing can vary between brands.

How to Clean a Fly Sheet, Mask or Leggins

Cleaning your horse's fly sheet is important to keep it free from dirt, sweat, and other debris that can build up over time and reduce its effectiveness against flies, other insects and harmful UV rays.

Epona Ltd Tacknology Advanced Tack Sponge Bubbles Jacks Manufacturing Blanket Safe Deodorizer and Fly Sheet Wash

I like to use an advanced tack sponge like Epona's Ltd Tacknology's to remove any excess dirt and debris from the fly sheet with a soft brush or cloth. Be sure to check the care label on the fly sheet for specific cleaning instructions, as different materials may require different methods of cleaning. If the fly sheet is machine washable, place it in a washing machine on a gentle cycle using a mild detergent. Be sure to wash it separately from other items to prevent damage or snagging. If the fly sheet is not machine washable or if you prefer to hand wash it, fill a large bucket or sink with cool water and add a mild detergent like Jacks Manufacturing Blanket Safe Deodorizer and Fly Sheet Wash and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Hang the fly sheet to air dry, out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources, until completely dry.

Regular cleaning and maintenance of your horse's fly sheet can help to prolong its lifespan and keep it in good condition. Following these maintenance methods I've had fly sheets last for 2 seasons or more!

What are Fly Leggings?

No, we're not talking about the lycra-filled, uniform of choice for moms worldwide!  Fly boots, also known as fly leggings or fly wraps, are protective covers designed to be worn on a horse's lower legs during fly season. Fly boots are typically made of a lightweight, breathable material and are designed to provide protection against biting insects such as flies, mosquitoes, and gnats.

Fly leggings are available in a variety of styles and materials, ranging from basic mesh wraps to more elaborate boots with reinforced padding and secure fastenings. Some fly boots are designed to cover only the lower leg, while others extend up to the knee or hock.

Fly boots can be a useful addition to your fly control program, particularly if your horse is prone to developing sores or injuries from insect bites, or if they are agitated or uncomfortable due to fly bites. However, it's important to choose a pair of fly boots that fits properly and is appropriate for your horse's needs. You should also monitor your horse for any signs of irritation or discomfort while wearing the boots, and remove them if necessary.

We hope to have equipped you with some knowledge and practical advice for guarding yourselves and your horses against the inevitable approach of fly season. Get ahead of the pests and shop fly control products at NRS now.
