Rhode Island may be America’s smallest state, but the breed developed there in the late 1800s made huge changes in chicken husbandry. The Rhode Island Red’s amazing ability to lay about 265 eggs a year made it famous worldwide and became the parent of several modern hybrid egg layers. These glossy mahogany-colored hens with black tail feathers are as beautiful as they are gentle and productive. 

**Pick-up for all Ready-to-Lay hens will be on March 29th, 2025 at NRS Feed in Decatur from 8AM - 10AM. At this time, your hen(s) will be 18 weeks old which is when most hens lay their first egg. In their first year, you can expect up to 250 eggs from high-producing, well-fed backyard chickens. We have a limited quantity of Ready-to-Lay hens for purchase and it will be first come, first serve. If your hen is not picked up during scheduled pick-up hours your hen will be forfeited and available for purchase on-site. Email required at checkout.**
