Why Wickenburg Is the Team Roping Capital of the World
When the first hard frost hits many parts of the country, a whole lot of horse trailers start pointing towards a little old gold-mining town about an hour northwest of Phoenix that, for a few months every year, turns into one of the busiest roping towns in America. Whether you're hauling in for the whole winter or just a week of jackpots, this guide covers what the Wickenburg roping season looks like, where folks rope and camp, what to pack, and where to restock when you get here.
Wickenburg calls itself the Team Roping Capital of the World, and from November through March it earns the name. Mild, dry winter weather means you can rope outside nearly every day, and with several arenas within a few minutes of each other, there's a jackpot, practice, or roping school going on just about every day of the week. One Wyoming roper who winters here told Cowboy State Daily the town is "a country club for ropers instead of golfers," and that's about right.
It isn't just the arenas. Wickenburg still feels like a cow town, with a historic downtown, guest ranches, miles of Hassayampa Riverbed to ride, and a community that's built around horses. A lot of snowbird ropers come for six weeks and end up coming back every winter.
When Is Roping Season in Wickenburg?
The season typically kicks off in November and runs into March, with the biggest crowds from late December through February. Exact dates change every year, so always confirm with the producer before you haul, but here's how a typical winter shapes up:
- Late November: Black Friday truck ropings kick things off as the first wave of snowbirds rolls in.
- Early December: "Vegas Week" warm-up jackpots, as ropers tune up before the World Series of Team Roping Finale in Las Vegas.
- New Year's and late January: Ariat World Series of Team Roping (WSTR) qualifiers.
- February: WSTR Title Fights, specialty ropings like the Western Horseman Sunshine Classic, and the town's Gold Rush Days celebration.
- March: The National Team Roping (NTR) National Finals wrap up the season.
Between the big events, weekly jackpots and practice sessions run all winter. If you're new to the area, plan your first week around practices so you and your horse can settle in before you start entering.
Where to Rope in Wickenburg
Most of Wickenburg's arenas sit close together, which makes it easy to rope at more than one place in a day. A few of the best-known venues:
Rancho Rio
Set along the Hassayampa River, Rancho Rio hosts many of the season's biggest events, including NTR and WSTR ropings, along with weekly jackpots, practices and winter camping with covered stalls.
Simpson Arena (Roper Nation)
Home to regular jackpots and practice sessions, plus RV hookups and horse boarding. It's also the site of the Western Horseman Sunshine Classic team roping each February.
Everett Bowman Rodeo Arena
The town-owned arena, named for one of Wickenburg's rodeo legends, hosts rodeos, ropings and team sortings throughout the year.
On top of these, a number of private arenas and roping schools run their own jackpots and practices each winter. Ask around once you're in town, because the schedule fills out fast once the snowbirds arrive.
Where to Stay and Park Your Rig
Many Wickenburg arenas offer RV hookups, dry camping, and stalls or pens, so a lot of ropers live right where they rope. Spots fill up early for the peak months, so book ahead, especially if you need full hookups and covered pens for more than one horse. If you're not living in your trailer, the town also has motels, vacation rentals, and a couple of historic guest ranches.
Before you leave home, check that your travel and trailer gear is in shape: hay bags, water buckets, a trailer-tie or two, and anything else that makes life on the road easier for you and your horse.
What to Pack for a Winter of Roping in Wickenburg
A winter in Arizona is a lot of roping in a short amount of time, and it's hard on ropes and gear. Here's what to bring (or plan to pick up when you get here):
Ropes, and Plenty of Them
Desert air is dry, and that changes how a rope feels and holds its body. Bring a few team ropes in the lays you trust, and expect to break in a few new ones over the season. A good rope bag keeps them protected from dust and temperature swings between sessions. Not sure which lay you need? Our rope FAQs are a good place to start.
A Roping Dummy for Off Days
When your horse needs a day off, you don't have to. A team roping dummy set up next to your camper keeps your swing sharp between jackpots.
Protective Boots and Saddle Pads
More runs means more wear on your horse. Pack a full set of protective horse boots and a backup saddle pad so you can rotate while one dries out.
Layers for Cold Mornings
Arizona winters fool a lot of first-timers. Mornings can be close to freezing before warming up nicely by afternoon. A good vest or jacket from our men's outerwear or women's outerwear collections will get a lot of use.
A Hat That Fits
The desert sun is no joke, even in January. A straw cowboy hat works for warm afternoons, and a felt hat is still right for cold mornings and evenings in town.
Feed and Horse Care on the Road
Changing climate, water, and hay all at once can be hard on a horse's gut, and a heavy roping schedule only adds to it. Try to bring enough of your horse's regular feed to transition slowly once you arrive, and keep up with your normal program of horse supplements, deworming and joint care. Stock a basic first-aid kit from our horse medical collection, too, because the closest vet may be busy during peak season.
If you run low, you don't have to drive to Phoenix. The NRS store in Wickenburg has a full-service feed store with horse feed, hay, and livestock supplies right on Wickenburg Way.
